Marissa Mayer discusses AI uncertainty and industry responsibility
At the Most Powerful Women Summit in California, former Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer addressed the uncertain future of artificial intelligence. Mayer stated that anyone claiming to know exactly how AI will evolve is “either lying or arrogant or both,” emphasizing that the technology's trajectory remains unpredictable.
While acknowledging the possibility of negative outcomes, Mayer estimated the odds of a harmful future are “well less than 50%.” She expressed optimism regarding potential breakthroughs in medicine and science, as well as the potential for AI to free individuals to spend their time as they choose.
Mayer also addressed shifting public sentiment in the United States, noting that the tech industry bears responsibility for growing unease. She described early industry messaging as “perhaps too cavalier,” which has contributed to public concerns regarding the impact of AI on jobs, families, and children. She welcomed ongoing discussions regarding regulation and collaboration among frontier AI labs.
In a related development, Dazzle AI has launched a personal assistant that utilizes a user's photo library to infer context and suggest tasks such as planning, buying, or fixing items. The product is designed to exclude potentially sensitive images.
