Marist Catholic football coach fired after onside kick during blowout win

Zach Loboy, the head football coach at Marist Catholic School in Eugene, Oregon, has been dismissed following a game against Cottage Grove on October 9. The decision came after Loboy called for an onside kick while his team held a significant lead.

During the first half, with 1:47 remaining, Marist Catholic led 56-0. The decision to attempt an onside kick—a tactic typically used by trailing teams to regain possession—led athletic directors from both schools and the Lane County Football Association commissioner to end the game early at halftime.

Marist Catholic athletic director Rick Gardner stated that the decision to call for the kick was “not reflective of the school’s mission and how we want to treat our opponents.” Loboy has been replaced by interim coach Jake Lowther.
