Maritime accidents in the Philippines leave one dead and 26 rescued

Two separate maritime incidents involving motorized vessels occurred in Philippine waters due to adverse weather conditions.

In Cagayan, a motorized banca traveling from Claveria to Calayan sank on September 5, 2026, after the southwest monsoon caused strong winds and rough waves. All 18 passengers and crew members, including police, fire protection, and marine corps personnel, were rescued by the Calayan Police, Philippine Coast Guard, and civilian volunteers. Authorities are investigating the loss of firearms and government property that went down with the vessel.

In a separate incident off Liwagao Island in Antique, a motorboat named San Agustin IV capsized while traveling from Semirara Port to Occidental Mindoro. The Philippine Coast Guard reported that one person died and eight others were rescued after being found clinging to the boat’s keel. Rescuers located the vessel on the morning of September 6 following a loss of communication with the crew.
