Maritime and Coastguard Agency signs union agreement with GMB

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has signed a formal agreement allowing the GMB union to represent approximately 3,000 Coastguard Rescue Officers (CROs). These volunteers are responsible for emergency responses and search operations along the UK coastline.

The agreement follows a months-long campaign by the GMB after the MCA previously resisted recognition, leading the union to initiate proceedings with the Central Arbitration Committee (CAC). The MCA noted that the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union, its existing union, advised in October that it was no longer the appropriate representative for CROs.

The deal follows recent disputes regarding the employment status and compensation of officers. In July, the UK government abandoned a proposal to replace training and emergency call-out payments with an expenses-only system, a move that had raised concerns regarding recruitment and service resilience.
