Maritime and Storage Containers: Standards, Differences, and Construction Uses

Maritime containers are built to international ISO standards (ISO 668 and ISO 1496), which define their external dimensions, structural strength, corner castings and sealing to withstand ocean transport, stacking, and handling by port equipment. Their steel construction, corrosion‑resistant Corten coating, and reinforced floor make them suitable for intermodal shipping worldwide.

Storage containers do not have to meet these ISO certifications, allowing more varied sizes and custom designs but limiting them to static, land‑based use. They lack the structural features required for sea voyages and cannot be handled by standard port gear.

Because of their robust steel shells, maritime containers are increasingly repurposed for construction and storage projects. Converting them into habitable spaces or modular buildings requires careful thermal insulation—either interior or exterior—to mitigate heat gain in summer and loss in winter. Structural cuts for windows and doors must be reinforced, and multiple containers can be combined to create larger dwellings or commercial units.
