Maritime authorities close ports in Peru and Mexico due to weather
Maritime authorities in Peru and Mexico have implemented closures and restrictions due to adverse weather conditions. In Peru, the National Maritime Authority (DICAPI) has ordered the temporary closure of 20 ports and terminals along the central coast. This precautionary measure follows reports from the National Emergency Operations Center (COEN) regarding light to moderate swells. The closures affect several locations, including Chimbote, Samanco, and Casma. Technical forecasts suggest these anomalous marine conditions will persist until November 8, prompting recommendations to suspend fishing, aquaculture, tourism, and recreational activities in the affected areas.
In Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, aquatic service providers at El Médano reported a significant decline in business during October. Raúl Olivares, president of the Association of Aquatic Service Providers of El Médano, stated that storms and heavy rainfall led to port closures that halted operations for nearly half a month. Despite the difficult month, the sector aims for a 60% increase in sales in November, banking on increased cruise ship arrivals and a projected hotel occupancy rate of approximately 70% for the region.
