Global maritime routes face escalating geopolitical and conflict risks

Major global maritime corridors are increasingly being utilized as strategic pressure points, disrupting international trade, energy markets, and food security. Conflicts in the Black Sea, the Red Sea, and the Strait of Hormuz have transformed vital shipping lanes into high-risk zones.

In the Black Sea, drone attacks on vessels and ports have severely impacted grain exports from Russia and Ukraine. Ukrainian maritime agricultural exports fell to 1.4 million tons in August, a nearly 75% decrease from pre-war levels. Recent attacks near Romania and Bulgaria have resulted in casualties among seafarers, while shipping volumes in Ukraine’s Odesa region have seen significant declines.

Simultaneously, tensions in the Middle East, including Houthi attacks in the Red Sea and a military confrontation involving the United States, Israel, and Iran following events on February 28, 2026, have destabilized the Strait of Hormuz. These disruptions force vessels to adopt longer, more expensive routes, such as around the Cape of Good Hope, increasing fuel consumption, insurance costs, and operational expenses.

Beyond conflict, maritime stability is also threatened by climate factors, such as water shortages affecting the Panama Canal. Because maritime transport accounts for over 80% of global trade volume, these combined geopolitical and environmental pressures pose systemic risks to global inflation, supply chains, and the safety of approximately two million seafarers.
