Maritime incidents and insurance claims rise in Norway

Maritime incidents and boat-related damages remain significant in Norway as the boating season nears its end. In the Østfold region, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre has recorded 362 rescue operations related to boat incidents since 2023, with 90 occurring so far this year. Hvaler has seen the highest number of rescue operations in the region with 123, followed by Fredrikstad with 95 and Moss with 75.

Insurance data highlights the economic impact of these incidents. Gjensidige reported 1,261 boat-related damage claims in Østfold since January 2023, totaling 68.6 million NOK in damages. Nationally, insurance trends show that while the total number of boat damages decreased in 2025 compared to the previous year, the cost of repairs has increased. This is attributed to more expensive boats and equipment. In 2025, 12,919 boat damages were reported to insurance companies, costing a total of 825 million NOK.

Common causes for maritime assistance include vessel assistance, drifting leisure boats, groundings, leaks, and fires. Experts advise boat owners to perform maintenance and safety checks before the weather turns colder and days become shorter to avoid costly repairs and dangerous situations.
