Maritime Labour Convention symposium addresses seafarers' welfare

A symposium was held in Athens to mark the 20th anniversary of the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) adoption of the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) in 2006. Co-organized by the Panhellenic Seamen's Federation (PNO) and the Cypriot Federation of Transport, Petroleum and Agriculture Workers (OMEPÉGÉ), the event brought together representatives from maritime unions, shipowners, governments, and international organizations.

Key discussions focused on the ongoing need to improve the MLC to address modern challenges in the maritime industry. Participants highlighted critical issues such as daily working hours, crew fatigue, and mental health as primary concerns. These factors were identified as essential to ensuring the safety of maritime operations and making the profession attractive to younger generations.

Speakers, including leadership from the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) and the ILO, emphasized that while the MLC has provided a vital international framework for protecting seafarers regardless of their flag or location, significant work remains regarding the implementation and refinement of these standards to ensure dignity and safety at sea.
