Maritime organizations urge EU to include Indian ship recycling facilities

Eight major international maritime organizations are calling on European Union member states to support a European Commission proposal to add two Indian ship recycling facilities to the updated European List of Ship Recycling Facilities.

The organizations, including BIMCO, CLIA, ECSA, ICS, Intercargo, Interferry, Intertanko, and the World Shipping Council, issued a joint open letter to EU environment and transport ministers. They argue that the inclusion of these two facilities reflects years of significant capital investment aimed at upgrading infrastructure, safety systems, and environmental management to meet both the Hong Kong Convention (HKC) and the EU Ship Recycling Regulation (EU SRR) standards.

The shipping industry emphasizes that the decision to include these facilities should be based strictly on objective assessments and inspections regarding safety and environmental protection requirements. As the industry prepares for an expected increase in the number of vessels reaching the end of their operational lives, the associations highlight that adding these facilities is a vital step toward ensuring sufficient compliant recycling capacity within the European list.
