Maritsa Iztok Holding established to restructure Bulgarian energy assets
The Maritsa Iztok Holding has been established following a decision by Bulgarian Energy Minister Iva Petrova to restructure the Bulgarian Energy Holding. The new entity incorporates the state-owned Maritsa Iztok Mines and the Maritsa Iztok 2 Thermal Power Plant (TPP).
The restructuring is designed to meet requirements of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan and aims to ensure the long-term future of the Maritsa basin. By 2030, over 700 million euros are planned for various activities, including more than 400 million euros dedicated to land reclamation and converting coal-mined areas into sites for economic activity. This transition is expected to secure jobs for over 800 miners.
Future energy projects under the new structure include the development of solar parks with significant storage capacities, a 20 MW photovoltaic park for internal use, and a 20 million euro wood chip combustion installation at the Maritsa Iztok 2 TPP. An independent auditor will confirm the value of transferred assets within 14 days of the decision, after which the company will be officially registered in the Commercial Register.
