Marius Borg Høiby granted new trial by Norwegian appeals court

The Borgarting Court of Appeal has accepted an appeal from Marius Borg Høiby, the 29-year-old son of Queen Mette-Marit, ordering a new trial regarding his previous convictions. In June, Høiby was sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of 34 out of 39 charges, including two counts of rape, domestic violence, assault, and drug possession.

The defense is specifically contesting the convictions for the two rapes and the violence against his former partner, Nora Haukland. The new proceedings will re-examine his guilt, the length of the sentence, and the required compensation to victims, which totaled approximately 640,000 Norwegian kroner.

Høiby, who is currently in pretrial detention under electronic monitoring at the royal estate Skaugum, recently attended the funeral of King Harald V with permission from authorities. While he maintains his innocence regarding the rape charges, he has agreed to extend his electronic monitoring for four weeks to avoid causing further disruption during the period of royal mourning.
