Marius Borg Høiby denied appeal to change pretrial detention
The Borgarting Court of Appeal has rejected an appeal by Marius Borg Høiby to end his pretrial detention via an electronic ankle monitor. The court ruled that he must continue serving his detention at Skaugum, the official residence of the Norwegian Crown Prince and Crown Princess, for at least another four weeks.
Høiby, the eldest son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit, was previously sentenced to four years in prison for crimes including sexual assault and violence against an ex-girlfriend. While he has been in pretrial detention since February, he has been permitted to serve it at home using an electronic monitor.
The court's decision to deny his request for a reverse alarm—which would have restricted his movement to specific areas outside of Oslo—was based on the assessment that there remains a significant risk of new offenses, specifically regarding a restraining order against a former partner.
The arrangement has drawn public scrutiny in Norway, with critics describing the conditions at the royal estate as overly luxurious for a detainee. Meanwhile, the situation has reportedly caused stress for Crown Princess Mette-Marit, who is currently recovering from a lung transplant.
