Marius Borg Høiby Remains in Custody After Prosecutor Appeals Release Decision

Oslo District Court approved Marius Borg Høiby’s request to be released from pre‑trial detention so he could be with his ailing mother, Crown Princess Mette‑Marit. The public prosecutor immediately appealed the decision, meaning Høiby must stay in custody until a higher court reviews the case.

Høiby, the son of Norway’s crown princess, faces up to 40 charges, including four counts of rape, assault in close relationships, illegal threats, breach of a restraining order and drug‑related offences. He has denied the most serious charges while acknowledging lesser offences. The trial concluded in early spring and a verdict is expected on 15 June, with the prosecutor seeking a sentence of seven years and seven months.

The appeal highlights the court’s stance that serious health concerns of a family member rarely outweigh concerns about repeat offences and public safety.
