Crown Princess Mette‑Marit was placed on the lung‑donor waiting list on 5 June 2024 after her pulmonary fibrosis worsened. Within two weeks she underwent a successful lung transplant at Oslo’s Rikshospitalet, prompting a surge in donor registrations and the royal couple’s cancellation of several engagements.

On 15 June the Oslo District Court convicted her 29‑year‑old son, Marius Borg Høiby, of two rapes, six counts of sexual molestation and other offences, sentencing him to four years in prison. The verdict also ordered compensation of 640 000 Norwegian crowns to the victims, a 1‑year‑8‑month driving ban, confiscation of electronic devices and a two‑year contact prohibition. Høiby was transferred to Ila prison in Bærum and has lodged an appeal.

His former partner, influencer Nora Haukland, reacted on social media, calling the judgment a “small victory” for justice and describing lingering trauma. Prison insiders warned that Høiby’s royal surname offers no special status behind bars. The combined events have dominated Norwegian media, highlighting both a grave criminal case within the royal family and a high‑profile medical recovery.
