Marius Borg Høiby, son of Norway’s Crown Princess, breaks hand in prison outburst before sentencing

Marius Borg Høiby, the son of Crown Princess Mette‑Marit of Norway, was sentenced by the Oslo district court on 15 June to four years’ imprisonment for two rapes and the assault of his former partner, as part of a broader case involving 40 alleged offences.

Ahead of the verdict, Høiby violently struck a cupboard in his cell after an appeal court rejected his request for release, breaking his right hand and being taken to the prison infirmary. The incident was reported after the court’s decision, and the judge ordered that he remain in pre‑trial detention, citing a risk of further offences despite a contact ban.

Høiby maintains his innocence on many counts and his lawyers have announced an appeal. The royal palace declined to comment on the case. His mother, Crown Princess Mette‑Marit, continues to await a donor lung transplant.
