An Oslo court has extended the pretrial detention of Marius Borg Høiby for an additional four weeks. The 29-year-old, the eldest son of Queen Mette-Marit, will continue to serve his detention under electronic monitoring at Skaugum, the royal residence.

Høiby was sentenced in June to four years in prison following convictions for multiple offenses, including two counts of rape. While he intends to appeal the ruling, the detention extension was granted as police cited a risk of recidivism. Høiby’s defense attorney indicated that the decision to consent to the extension was made to avoid public scrutiny and noise surrounding the upcoming funeral of King Harald V.

Despite his legal status, Høiby has been permitted to attend the funeral services for the late King Harald V in Oslo. He has previously been granted leave to visit the monarch in the hospital to say goodbye.
