Mariusz Błaszczak sparks debate over NATO Article 5 obligations

Former Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak has sparked political controversy following comments regarding Poland's obligations under NATO's Article 5. When asked if Polish soldiers should defend Estonia, Latvia, or Lithuania in the event of a Russian attack, Błaszczak stated that “Polish soldiers should defend Poland,” emphasizing that Poland is already on the front line due to its borders with Russia and Belarus.

Government spokesperson Adam Szłapka criticized the remarks, stating that Błaszczak “essentially undermined the most important principle of NATO — Article 5 of the Treaty, which states mutual assistance among allied states in the event of an attack on any of them.” Other officials, including Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński and MEP Krzysztof Brejza, also condemned the comments, suggesting they undermine the collective security framework.

Błaszczak responded by defending his record, citing previous military cooperation with Baltic states and the importance of the US alliance. He accused the current government under Donald Tusk of pursuing European autonomy at the expense of US relations and criticized the abandonment of certain military construction projects.
