Marjal dels Moros conservation efforts protect 61 pond turtles

Conservation efforts in the Marjal dels Moros in Sagunto have resulted in the collection of 61 hatchlings of the pond turtle (Emys orbicularis). This species has been listed as endangered since the late 20th century.

Through the work of the Generalitat Valenciana and the public company Vaersa, the survival rate of the species in this marshland has increased from 1% to 40% in recent years. In 2009, only one specimen was recorded, whereas 26 hatchlings were born in the marsh fifteen years later.

To protect the species from habitat loss, natural predators, and invasive species, Red Natura 2000 brigades locate and protect nests using metal mesh cages. The hatchlings are transferred to specialized facilities at Vaersa, Oceanogràfic, or Bioparc for care. Once they reach approximately one year of age, they are released back into their natural habitat.
