Marjane Satrapi Dies at 56, Family Says She Died of Sadness

Franco‑Iranian cartoonist and filmmaker Marjane Satrapi, best known for the graphic novel Persépolis, died at age 56. Her family released a statement saying she died “of sadness” after the death of her husband, film producer Mattias Ripa, a year earlier.

Satrapi’s work, which chronicled her childhood in revolutionary Iran, earned international acclaim, a César award and an Oscar nomination.
