Marjane Satrapi funeral in Paris honored by artists and politicians
On 19 June 2026, a funeral ceremony for Marjane Satrapi was held at the crematorium of Père‑Lachaise cemetery in Paris, fifteen days after her death on 4 June at age 56.
The service was attended by numerous figures from the arts and politics, including actresses Catherine Deneuve and her daughter Chiara Mastroianni, Iranian‑born actress Golshifteh Farahani, Canadian actress Charlotte Le Bon, television host Enora Malagré, journalist Tristane Banon, comedian Sophia Aram, regional president Valérie Pécresse and minister‑delegate Alice Rufo. Attendees carried photos of Satrapi and her husband Mattias Ripa and displayed copies of her graphic memoir Persepolis.
The funeral emphasized Satrapi’s lifelong advocacy for freedom, with the chant “Femme, vie, liberté,” echoing protests in Iran. Satrapi, an Iranian exile who naturalised as French in 2006, was renowned for Persepolis and for her outspoken criticism of the Iranian regime.
