Mark Abreu testifies on U.S. ambassadorship to El Salvador

Mark Abreu, the nominee for United States Ambassador to El Salvador, testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee regarding his vision for bilateral relations. Abreu highlighted significant security advancements in El Salvador, noting that the country has transitioned from being a high-crime region to one of the safest in the Western Hemisphere.

Abreu stated that strengthening the strategic relationship between the two nations aligns with foreign policy goals of increasing security and prosperity. He suggested that economic growth in El Salvador could serve as a model for Central America and help reduce migration to the United States by creating local opportunities and attracting American investment.

During the hearing, Democratic senators Tim Kaine and Chris Van Hollen raised concerns regarding human rights allegations in El Salvador, the conditions within the Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT), and the status of Salvadorans under Temporary Protected Status (TPS) in the U.S. Abreu committed to taking reports of human rights abuses seriously if confirmed.
