Mark Boumans to step down as mayor of Doetinchem
Mark Boumans, the mayor of Doetinchem, has announced his departure from the position. The 51-year-old official, who has served the city since 2017, will transition to a new role as the chairman of the Association of Universities of Applied Sciences (Vereniging Hogescholen) in The Hague.
Colleagues and regional leaders have praised Boumans for his strategic insight and his ability to foster cooperation among municipalities in the Achterhoek region. Anton Stapelkamp, mayor of Aalten, noted Boumans' role in rebuilding trust and strengthening inter-municipal collaboration following previous periods of instability. Joost van Oostrum, mayor of Berkelland, also highlighted Boumans' dedication to regional interests and his work with the Association of Dutch Municipalities (VNG).
Local residents expressed regret over his departure, citing his successful organization of major events, such as the 2025 King's Day celebrations, and his accessibility. Some residents also referenced the personal toll of his tenure, noting reports of past threats that had impacted his well-being.
