Mark Carney disputes U.S. account of collapsed trade talks

Prime Minister Mark Carney has rejected claims from the Trump administration regarding the collapse of Canada-U.S. trade negotiations last month. Speaking in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Carney dismissed assertions from U.S. cabinet officials that domestic Canadian politics caused Canada to withdraw its negotiating team on August 21.

Carney and chief trade negotiator Janice Charette maintain that Washington introduced last-minute demands that were economically damaging and unfair. Specifically, Carney stated the proposed terms would have restricted Canada’s ability to form trade agreements with other nations, weakened protections for the French language and Canadian culture, and undermined the automotive sector.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has countered this account, suggesting that an agreement had been effectively reached before Canada withdrew for political reasons. Lutnick denied that Washington sought changes affecting the French language, characterizing the issue as a politically manufactured concern intended to influence domestic debates in Quebec and Alberta.
