Mark Carney leads Canada into trade dispute with Donald Trump

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has entered a significant trade conflict with U.S. President Donald Trump following the collapse of negotiations for a new trade agreement. Carney terminated discussions after stating that U.S. demands were unacceptable, noting that the United States “demanded too much and offered too little.”

In response to U.S. punitive tariffs, the Canadian government has implemented retaliatory tariffs ranging between 25 and 50 percent on American goods. The tension has escalated beyond trade, with President Trump issuing a decree to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” citing the U.S. share of the water body.

Despite Canada's economic dependence on the U.S.—which accounts for over two-thirds of Canadian exports—Carney maintains a firm stance to protect national sovereignty. This approach has garnered significant domestic support, with the Prime Minister's approval rating rising to 60 percent.
