Mark Carney marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Edmonton

Prime Minister Mark Carney attended a ceremony at Fort Edmonton Park in Edmonton to observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. During his remarks, Carney emphasized that the day serves to honor the children who attended residential schools, the survivors of the system, and those who never returned home.

Carney noted that more than 150,000 First Nations, Métis, and Inuit children were separated from their families, cultures, and identities through the residential school system. He described the history as a “dark chapter in Canada’s past” and a “truth that endures,” calling on citizens to listen to survivors' stories and reflect on the responsibility of knowing this history to move forward together.
