Mark Carney to visit Turkey for historic bilateral talks

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will conduct a historic bilateral visit to Turkey from October 21 to 23, marking the first time a Canadian leader has made such a dedicated trip to the NATO ally. The visit includes stops in Ankara and Istanbul.

In Ankara, Carney is scheduled to meet with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to discuss strategic cooperation in energy, mining, climate, defense, and security. In Istanbul, the Prime Minister will engage with Turkish business leaders and investors, focusing on sectors such as aerospace, advanced technologies, and critical minerals.

The visit aims to bolster bilateral ties and advance ongoing negotiations for a free-trade agreement, which were formally launched during the NATO summit in July. This diplomatic push is part of a broader strategy to diversify Canada's international partnerships and reduce economic reliance on the United States following a collapse in trade talks in August.

Additionally, Turkey has agreed to join Canada's Defence Security and Resilience Bank as one of its ten founding member nations. Bilateral trade between the two countries has already seen a 50 per cent increase over the last five years.
