Mark Cerny signals career end and launches gaming foundation
Mark Cerny, the lead architect behind the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, has indicated that his professional career is entering its final chapter. While he has not officially retired, Cerny is currently involved in high-level technical work, including the development of custom chips for the upcoming PlayStation 6 and a rumored handheld device.
Alongside The Game Awards founder Geoff Keighley, Cerny is launching the Nova Games Foundation, a non-profit charitable initiative designed to support emerging game development teams. The foundation aims to provide seed funding of up to $500,000 without requiring equity or revenue sharing, helping new creators overcome technical and financial hurdles. The program will partner with institutions like USC and NYU to mentor graduates.
Separately, industry perspectives suggest that hardware manufacturers like Sony and Nintendo may extend the lifecycles of current-generation consoles. Former PlayStation studio head Shuhei Yoshida noted that rising component costs—driven largely by high demand for memory in AI data centers—and a lack of urgent demand for extreme performance may lead companies to delay the release of next-generation hardware to maintain consumer affordability.
