Mark Cuban advises Gen Z to prioritize employment over finding perfect roles
Investor Mark Cuban has advised Gen Z graduates facing a challenging job market to focus on securing any employment rather than waiting for a perfect role. Speaking on ‘The Diary of a CEO’ podcast, Cuban suggested that taking jobs at establishments like McDonald’s or Dairy Queen can demonstrate responsibility and the ability to advance within a hierarchy to future employers.
Cuban noted that while a major career upgrade may take two to three years, developing foundational skills—such as working on a schedule, managing interpersonal relationships, and reducing a supervisor's stress—is essential. He emphasized that the goal of early employment is not necessarily to remain in those roles, but to build a professional track record.
Reflecting on his own path to wealth, Cuban shared that his primary motivation for success was the desire to control his own time and destiny. He recounted that after selling his software company, MicroSolutions, for approximately $2 million in 1990, he stopped wearing watches to symbolize that he was no longer working on someone else's schedule.
