Mark Cuban invests in Las Vegas Athletics through $750 million fund
Entrepreneur Mark Cuban, via the newly created Harbinger Sports Partners fund, has acquired a minority stake in the Las Vegas Athletics. The $750 million private‑equity vehicle marks Cuban’s first ownership interest in Major League Baseball after he sold his majority stake in the Dallas Mavericks in 2023, a deal he later described as a “mistake.”
Cuban’s approach mirrors the playbook he used to transform the Mavericks, focusing on fan experience, branding and media revenue growth. The investment also aligns with the Athletics’ relocation from Oakland to Las Vegas, emphasizing the economic potential of the new market. A reported “handshake agreement” with Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont to retain basketball oversight fell apart after a controversial trade of Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers in February 2025, leading to further franchise changes.
The deal underscores a broader trend of treating sports franchises as growth‑oriented entertainment businesses rather than purely local assets.
