Mark Dittli appointed editor-in-chief of Neue Zürcher Zeitung

Mark Dittli will succeed Eric Gujer as the editor-in-chief of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ), effective February 1, 2027. The appointment marks a shift for the Swiss publication, as the board of directors opted for an external candidate rather than an internal successor.

Dittli, a financial and economic journalist born in 1974, brings a background in business administration and extensive experience in economic reporting. He previously served as a foreign correspondent in New York and as editor-in-chief of Finanz und Wirtschaft. He also co-founded the financial magazine The Market, which was fully acquired by NZZ at the end of 2023.

The NZZ board cited Dittli’s expertise in artificial intelligence, digital products, and evolving reading habits as key reasons for his selection. His professional history includes work with the online magazine Republik, which is often viewed as left-leaning, contrasting with the NZZ’s traditional liberal and conservative-leaning reputation.
