Mark Kiptoo breaks over-50 marathon world record
Kenyan runner Mark Kiptoo set a new world record for male marathon runners aged 50 and above at the Mainova Frankfurt Marathon in Germany. Kiptoo clocked a time of 2:15:13, shattering the previous record of 2:19:29 set by South Africa’s Titus Mamabolo in 1991.
Finishing 13th overall in the race, Kiptoo’s performance is highly significant under 2025 World Masters Athletics age-grading standards. His time is considered equivalent to an open-class world-standard performance of 2:00:35, a mark identical to the time run by former world-record holder Kelvin Kiptum at the 2023 Chicago Marathon.
This achievement follows Kiptoo’s recent success in the half marathon, where he set an over-50 best of 1:03:57 at the San Sebastián Half Marathon in Spain. Kiptoo, who previously won the Frankfurt Marathon in 2014, noted that running is a way of life for him and expressed a desire to inspire others through his continued competition.
