Mark O'Connor selected for Australia's U-15 FIFA World Cup squad

Fifteen-year-old midfielder Mark O’Connor has been selected to represent Australia at the FIFA Under-15 World Cup, which is scheduled to take place next month in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Originally from Darwin, O’Connor developed his skills through local clubs including Greater Palmerston United, Mindil Aces, and Darwin Olympic. Darwin Olympic president Yianni Prouzos noted that O’Connor’s selection highlights the talent available within the Northern Territory, specifically praising his ball movement, spatial scanning, and physical resilience.

O’Connor, who cites Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard as an inspiration, expressed initial shock at his national call-up. His selection is viewed by local teammates and officials as a significant pathway for regional athletes to reach the international stage despite the challenges of competing as underdogs in interstate competitions.
