Mark Ruffalo criticizes Gavin Newsom over California billionaire tax dispute
Actor Mark Ruffalo has publicly criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom over his opposition to a proposed billionaire wealth tax. Ruffalo described Newsom’s stance as ‘disqualifying’ for anyone seeking higher office, arguing that the governor is siding with wealthy interests while the cost of living rises and healthcare access remains limited for many.
The dispute centers on two competing ballot measures in California. Proposition 40 is a ballot initiative that would impose a one-time tax equal to 5% of the net worth of billionaires who were California residents as of January 1, 2026. The revenue would be used to fund healthcare and other services.
In contrast, Newsom has supported Proposition 42, a separate measure that would prohibit the state from establishing new taxes on the ownership of financial assets, personal property, or certain retroactive taxes. If Proposition 42 is approved, it could prevent Proposition 40 from taking effect. While the California Democratic Party has endorsed the billionaire tax, Newsom’s opposition has drawn criticism from progressive figures, including Representative Ro Khanna.
