Mark Ruffalo promotes sustainability to combat fracking in New York
Actor Mark Ruffalo has reinforced his environmental activism by utilizing his property in the Catskill Mountains region of New York to promote sustainability and oppose hydraulic fracturing, known as fracking.
Ruffalo resides on a farm of approximately 19 to 20 hectares, which he has developed into an ecological space featuring solar panels and organic farming methods. His opposition to the gas industry stems from his observations of water contamination in communities such as Dimock, Pennsylvania, where residents reported issues with well water following gas extraction activities.
While Ruffalo's advocacy contributed to a 2014 state ban on fracking in New York, the struggle continues. Activists and legislators are currently working to close legal loopholes that might allow companies to use compressed carbon dioxide for gas extraction, a method Ruffalo has described as “experimental and dangerous.”
