Mark Tirta, renowned Albanian ethnologist, passes away
Academic emeritus Mark Tirta, a prominent figure in Albanian ethnology and anthropology, passed away on August 27, 2026, at the age of 88. The Academy of Sciences of Albania expressed deep condolences, noting his extraordinary contributions to the study of Albanian material and spiritual culture.
Born in Orosh, Mirdita, Tirta completed his studies in History and Linguistics at the University of Tirana in 1961. His career spanned over six decades, including research roles at the Institute of History and the Institute of Popular Culture. In 2008, he was elected as a member of the Academy of Sciences in the Social and Albanological Sciences Section, later receiving the status of Academic Emeritus.
Tirta was known for his extensive fieldwork, participating in numerous expeditions to document Albanian traditions, customs, beliefs, and community organization. His vast scientific legacy includes more than 300 scholarly works and participation in over 100 national and international conferences.
