Sentencing has commenced in Nanaimo, B.C., for Mark Tyler Hilland, a 47-year-old former RCMP constable who pleaded guilty to breach of trust by a public officer. The case stems from an incident in July 2024, during which Hilland, while on duty and in uniform, engaged in consensual sex with a woman he had met during his shift.

According to court submissions, the interaction began while Hilland was filling out a report in his police vehicle. The woman, whose identity is protected by a publication ban, had previously been involved in the sex trade. Following the conclusion of his shift on July 3, 2024, Hilland visited the woman at her apartment.

During the proceedings before Judge Reginald Harris, Crown counsel Andrew McLean requested a suspended sentence, which would result in a criminal record. Defence counsel Brad Kielmann argued for a conditional discharge, which would allow the individual to avoid a criminal record if specific probation conditions are met.
