Mark van Bommel begins Belgium coaching tenure as son Ruben joins Netherlands squad

Mark van Bommel has officially begun his tenure as the head coach of the Belgium national football team. In his initial press conference, he emphasized a desire for tactical organization and a focus on rejuvenating the squad by giving younger talents more opportunities.

In a unique sporting development, his son, 22-year-old PSV attacker Ruben van Bommel, has received his first call-up to the Netherlands national team under coach Xavi Hernandez. Ruben’s selection follows his recovery from a serious cruciate ligament injury.

Former Belgian international Luc Nilis, a former teammate of Mark van Bommel at PSV, expressed optimism regarding the appointment. Nilis praised Van Bommel’s potential as a people manager and noted that his selection strategy appears to favor a younger, more attacking style of play. Nilis also cautioned that Van Bommel must manage his staff and core players carefully to navigate the differing media pressures found in the Netherlands and Belgium.
