Chelsea owners Boehly and Walter in talks to sell stakes to Clearlake Capital

Chelsea FC co-owners Todd Boehly and Mark Walter are in discussions to sell their respective minority stakes in the club to the majority owner, Clearlake Capital. Each individual holds approximately 12.8% of the club. If the transaction is completed, Clearlake Capital's ownership could rise to over 86%, granting the private equity firm effective unilateral control over the club.

The potential deal could value Chelsea FC at more than £5 billion, a significant increase from the £2.3 billion to £2.5 billion paid by the consortium during the 2022 takeover from Roman Abramovich. The negotiations are reportedly driven by long-standing strategic disagreements between Boehly and Clearlake executives, specifically regarding player recruitment, management, and plans for the future of the Stamford Bridge stadium.

Separately, Mark Walter is facing scrutiny from the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the SEC regarding his business empire, specifically concerning potential undisclosed loans and asset disclosures within his insurance companies. Boehly is also expected to step down as Chelsea chairman at the end of the current season as part of a pre-existing ownership arrangement.
