Mark Zuckerberg opposes White House AI regulator proposal

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg reportedly opposed a White House proposal to establish a national artificial intelligence regulatory body during a private conversation with President Donald Trump in August.

The proposal, inspired by a framework from Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, suggests creating an independent standards organization modeled after the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). Under this model, frontier AI companies would provide access to new models up to 30 days before release so experts can test for risks related to cybersecurity and biological research.

While Zuckerberg did not explicitly ask the President to abandon the plan, he suggested that any appointed regulators should reflect a more lenient approach to AI. Zuckerberg has expressed concerns that regulatory policies causing even brief delays in model deployment could jeopardize American leadership in the strategic technological competition with China.
