On the 31st anniversary of the second Markale marketplace massacre, officials and survivors in Sarajevo gathered to honor the 43 civilians killed and approximately 84 others wounded on August 28, 1995. The attack, involving 120mm mortar shells fired from the direction of Trebević, was attributed by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia to the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS).

During the commemorations, Bosnian Presidency Chairman Denis Bećirović and Sarajevo Mayor Samir Avdić emphasized the importance of remembering the truth to build a secure future. The event coincided with recent political tensions in the Republika Srpska entity, where groups gathered to honor the late Ratko Mladić, a convicted war criminal.

Medical professionals who served during the siege recalled the extreme conditions of the day, describing the triage process and the scale of human devastation. The 1995 massacre served as a critical turning point in the Bosnian War, directly prompting NATO air strikes against VRS positions and accelerating the path toward the Dayton Peace Agreement.
