Markel Sanchez releases debut speculative novel ‘Sorbatza’
Author Markel Sanchez has released his debut novel, ‘Sorbatza’, published by Elkar. The work is a speculative exercise set in the year 2054, imagining a territory similar to the Basque Country in a hypothetical future.
The narrative is set in the period between two revolutions, focusing on a group called Sorbatza that seeks to exert influence through art in a society following the ‘Great Transformation’. The plot centers on the investigation of an unusual death, presented through citizen testimonies and meeting minutes.
Sanchez describes the project as an attempt to imagine a technologically advanced society that has overcome capitalism and major forms of oppression. Rather than focusing on technical functions, the author aimed to explore the new social conditions, creative possibilities, and the unique conflicts and debates that such a society might produce.
