Market fires in Acapulco and Cuernavaca cause significant damage

Major fires have struck central markets in Mexico, causing significant damage to local commerce. In Acapulco, a fire broke out early Wednesday morning, destroying at least 90 stalls. The blaze heavily impacted the footwear and flower sections, with temperatures inside the building exceeding 600 degrees Celsius. Over 100 emergency responders, including firefighters and civil protection personnel, worked to contain the flames and prevent them from reaching clothing warehouses.

In Cuernavaca, following a fire at the Adolfo López Mateos (ALM) market on September 14, political analyst Sergio Pérez Flores has called for urgent improvements to industrial safety infrastructure. He noted that vendors were forced to fight flames with water buckets due to a lack of basic emergency equipment. The ALM market is a vital economic hub, housing more than 4,100 businesses that support thousands of families and facilitate local food security by connecting producers directly to consumers.
