Market fires in Morocco and Egypt prompt safety and insurance measures

Recent market fires in Morocco and Egypt have highlighted the urgent need for improved fire safety and commercial insurance coverage for traders.

In Morocco, following significant fires at the Melilia Market in Oujda and markets in Tangier, the Oriental Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Services has approved a partnership with a national insurance company. This initiative aims to provide comprehensive coverage for merchants, including protection for shops, goods, and health coverage. The move addresses structural issues, such as the lack of property deeds and complex rental contracts, which previously prevented traders from accessing insurance compensation.

In Egypt, civil defense forces successfully contained a fire at the Kafr al-Badmas market in the Daqahliya Governorate. The blaze originated in a pigeon tower and spread to five adjacent towers in nearby residential units. Authorities disconnected electricity in the area as a precaution, and no deaths or injuries were reported. Cooling operations were conducted to prevent reignition.
