Paks Nuclear Power Plant: Hungary initiates emergency Danube works

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar has announced emergency engineering measures to combat record low water levels in the Danube, which threaten the cooling systems of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant. The plant is currently operating at approximately 25% capacity due to the drought.

To stabilize water levels, the government is constructing a riverbed sill between Paks and Dunaszentbenedek, a project expected to use 145,000 cubic meters of stone and cost approximately 16.5 million euros. Additionally, authorities are preparing to sink two 80-meter barges to provide an immediate, short-term increase in water levels. A complete shutdown of the Paks plant would result in a monthly loss of roughly 50 billion forints for the country.

The drought has also impacted neighboring Romania, which recently shut down its last working reactor at the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant. Magyar has also criticized the previous administration's nuclear expansion plans with Rosatom, questioning the reliability of the Paks II project in the face of increasing climate volatility.
