Market trends show rising S&P 500 earnings and healthcare opportunities in India and Africa

Market analysts are observing shifting trends in both the S&P 500 and emerging market healthcare sectors. Despite concerns regarding oil prices, earnings forecasts for the S&P 500 remain robust. According to FactSet data, the bottom-up earnings per share forecast for the S&P 500 rose by 0.3 percent between June 30 and July 30, increasing from $88.67 to $88.95. This upward trend at the start of a quarter is noted as unusual compared to historical averages. Projections for the full year 2026 also saw an increase of 3.2 percent.

In the healthcare sector, fund managers at J O Hambro suggest that pharmaceutical stocks in India and Africa may be poised for a comeback. While the MSCI Emerging Markets Health Care Index has underperformed the broader market by 41 percent over the last year due to regulatory uncertainties and a weaker US dollar, improved fundamentals and attractive valuations are driving renewed interest. This shift comes as capital continues to flow heavily into artificial intelligence technologies.
