Marketing attribution challenges reflect changing consumer behaviors
Modern consumer behavior is increasingly difficult to track using traditional marketing funnel frameworks. Current measurement systems often fail to capture the full journey of discovery, consideration, and purchase, leading to potential budget misallocations.
Research from Boston Consulting Group identifies “4S behaviors”—streaming, scrolling, searching, and shopping—as key drivers of how consumers move between different forms of decision-making. Because these behaviors frequently overlap, a single purchase may be influenced by multiple interactions, such as creator content, social recommendations, or AI-driven answers, that leave a weak attribution trail.
This measurement gap creates a risk where budget is disproportionately directed toward channels that appear most efficient simply because they sit closest to the final transaction, while other influential touchpoints are deprioritized.
