Markos Botsaris commemorated at Karpenisi’s Botsaria 2026 ceremony
On Saturday 1 August 2026, the municipality of Karpenisi hosted the Botsaria 2026 commemorative event at the historic Kefalovryso site, where Greek revolutionary hero Markos Botsaris fell in battle. The ceremony, organized by the local authorities, was attended by state officials, local government representatives, members of the armed forces, security services, cultural societies and the public.
The program began with a memorial prayer led by Metropolitan Georgios of Karpenisi, followed by a wreath‑laying by Evaggelos Katsimbas, president of the Byzantine and Historical Studies Society of Preveza, representing the Friends of Markos Botsaris. A musical piece titled “Evening and Holy Light,” composed by Dimitris Maramis and performed by the Municipal Philharmonic of Karpenisi under conductor Evangelia Varsou, dramatized the battle of Kefalovryso. The staging was directed by Ilias Tsounis. The event highlighted the community’s commitment to preserving historical memory and honoring Botsaris’s sacrifice.
