Markus Achleitner resigns as Upper Austria Economic Councilor

Markus Achleitner, the Economic Provincial Councilor for Upper Austria, has announced his resignation from the ÖVP government. Achleitner stated that his decision is intended to facilitate an orderly transition one year ahead of the upcoming state elections. He intends to remain in his current role until the next state parliamentary session on November 12, after which he plans to return to the private sector.

Achleitner's departure follows months of criticism regarding his economic policies, including controversial decisions involving forest clearing in Ohlsdorf and communication regarding Google's potential settlement in Kronstorf. He has also faced scrutiny over the regional government's restrictive stance on wind power expansion.

The ÖVP has unanimously selected Christiane Frauscher as his successor. Frauscher, a 52-year-old jurist, has served as the Provincial Finance Director since 2014 and has led the Upper Austrian State Holding in a dual leadership role since 2023. She received 100 percent approval from the party executive for the position.
