Markus Hinterhäuser's Exit Fuels Board Criticism at Salzburg Festival

Former Salzburg Festival intendant Markus Hinterhäuser was abruptly placed on leave in March and his contract terminated soon after, prompting a wave of criticism over the festival's governance. Cultural manager and lawyer Sven Hartberger published a book, "Das Salzburger Große Affentheater," accusing the festival board—headed by state governor Karoline Edtstadler and mayor Bernhard Auinger—of political cronyism, lack of transparency and unclear financial costs surrounding Hinterhäuser's departure.

Despite the controversy, Hinterhäuser has resumed attending rehearsals and concerts and will perform as a pianist at two upcoming festival events. Both Edtstadler and Auinger have declined to comment on the book’s allegations, stating they will not give the work additional publicity. The book was released by Tres Mundos and aims to spark public debate about the alleged "political unculture" within the festival’s oversight body.
